Creative Studio Lesson 5: Directing a cooking programme

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Me and Andrea directed the programme. Working together to discuss shots and give commands to the crew. We took it in turns to do the as directed part of the programme. I did the 2nd take after feedback on the first. The problems we faced were cam 2 not in mid-shot when we needed it to be. Cam 1 being out of focus for me and cam 3 cutting off the presenters head. All these mistakes were adjusted whilst filming, so we can cut between the other cameras until the camera was ready for the shot we wanted. This was a stressful process as I’m commanding what shots to cut to whilst telling the camera how to adjust their shot ready to cut back to them. For example ‘2 next, could cam 3 tilt up so the presenter isn’t cut off frame.’ In rehearsal I couldn’t remember all the lines the director said like he doesn’t say ‘on camera 2 next’, the PA does. I only have to say ‘2 next.’ So I used the proper lines once we did a take. We also didn’t start the soundtrack straight away but I kept control, telling floor manager to ‘give us a sec’ until the music was played then I continued with ‘cue mix and cue presenter.’ The as directed part was running under 2 minutes in the first take. So I spoke to the presenter to slowly make the sandwich and if it was done too early. Just present it, cut it in half and improvise some lines until the as directed part was done. Then in the final 30 seconds of the programme read the last lines of the script to finish it. So on my take, we did that and successfully had the as directed part on for 2 minutes. Next time I would make sure everyone in rehearsal knows what they’re doing so we can avoid as little mistakes as possible.
