Creative Studio Lesson 4: Children’s bedtime story

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

This lesson we did two children programmes with a presenter, like the CBeebies bedtime stories. Having the presenter read the story to the camera whilst cutting to shots of the book. We did two books, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and Big Ted’s Tired. For the first book, I was the camera operator on camera 1. For the second book, I was an autocue operator. For camera 1 it was my job to pan across the book to show the illustrations and text that is being read out. I also had to give the presenter a mid-shot to talk directly to the camera at the start and end of the programme. I had to remember to follow these shots, so I could be prepared when the director cuts to me. I had time to adjust my camera when the other cameras were being used. So I had 3 shots before they cut back to my camera. So I had to make sure I knew what I was doing and the rehearsal helped me practice the different shots. So I knew exactly what image I needed when I changed shots. I knew what focus and zoom to use as the director saw me prepare the shots beforehand. Guiding me on how he wants it presented. Also when we were filming the final shot, I was told to zoom out. Which showed that the shots could change whilst we’re filming the show but by hearing the director in my headphones it wasn’t hard to react to this. Providing an effective ending and I’m happy with how all the shots turned out in the end. As an autocue operator, I needed to make sure the text would be clearly seen by the presenter in the studio. From the gallery I can hear the presenter and depending on the speed Lucy said her lines. Meant what speed I would control the autocue, so sometimes I had to slow down or speed up to follow her voice.
